Is 30% Vitamin C Too Strong? What the Rule Everyone Repeats Actually Means

Search for advice on vitamin C strength and you will meet the same answer everywhere. Ten to twenty per cent is the sweet spot. Above twenty per cent you gain nothing and risk irritation. The skin saturates, the extra is wasted, and anyone selling you a higher number is selling you marketing.

It is repeated by dermatologists, by large skincare brands, and by most of the first page of Google. It is also, as far as it goes, correct.

What almost nobody mentions is what it is correct about. That entire body of advice comes from research on L-ascorbic acid - the pure, water-soluble form of vitamin C. And L-ascorbic acid is not the only vitamin C on the shelf.

Where the Twenty Per Cent Rule Comes From

The ceiling is not arbitrary. It comes from work on how vitamin C actually crosses skin, and there are two reasons behind it.

The first is transport. L-ascorbic acid is water-loving and carries a charge, which makes it poorly suited to crossing a barrier built to keep water out. It relies on specific transporters in the skin to carry it in. Transporters are finite. Once they are working at capacity, adding more vitamin C to the surface does not get more of it inside - the queue is full. That is the saturation point the advice refers to, and it lands somewhere around twenty per cent.

The second is pH. L-ascorbic acid is only stable in a strongly acidic formula, below about pH 3.5. That is not a formulation preference, it is a requirement of the molecule. The higher the concentration, the more acidic the product tends to be, and the more likely it is to sting, redden or simply be abandoned in a drawer.

So the rule is sound. For that molecule, above twenty per cent you are mostly buying irritation.

A Different Molecule, A Different Ceiling

Our vitamin C is tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, usually shortened to THD-C. It is a vitamin C ester - the ascorbate core with fatty acid chains attached to its reactive sites - and those attachments change its behaviour completely.

It is oil-soluble rather than water-soluble. That means it is not queuing for the same transporters. A lipid-friendly molecule moves through the skin's own lipid layers, which is a different route entirely and not one that saturates in the same way.

It is not acidic. The groups that made ascorbic acid an acid are capped, so THD-C can sit at a skin-neutral pH. The relationship between concentration and sting is broken. A higher percentage does not mean a more acidic product, because the product was never acidic to begin with.

It converts once it is inside. THD-C is a precursor. It is carried into the skin as an ester and converted to ascorbic acid by enzymes within the skin itself, releasing the active form where it is wanted rather than depositing it on the surface.

None of which makes THD-C automatically superior. It is a genuine trade - the conversion step means not every molecule applied becomes active vitamin C, and the exact conversion rate in living skin has never been precisely quantified. That is an honest limitation and worth knowing.

But it does mean that a rule derived from L-ascorbic acid does not transfer. Applying the twenty per cent ceiling to an oil-soluble ester at neutral pH is a category error. It is the right answer to a different question.

So Should You Use Thirty Per Cent?

Not necessarily, and not first.

Here is the part that gets lost when brands compete on numbers: the best concentration is the one you will actually use consistently. A serum you apply every morning for two years will do more for your skin than a stronger one you use twice and abandon. That principle holds regardless of which molecule you choose, and it is the single most useful thing in this article.

Ten per cent is where to begin if you are new to vitamin C, if your skin tends toward reactivity, or if you simply want an antioxidant step that asks nothing of you. It is not a token concentration - it is a genuine working strength.

Twenty per cent suits skin that has been using vitamin C comfortably for a while and wants more of it, and it is where most people settle.

Thirty per cent is for people who have used twenty per cent consistently for months, whose skin shows no reactivity to actives, and who want the most our range offers. It is a considered step rather than a shortcut, and it is worth saying plainly that moving up is optional. Plenty of skin does beautifully at twenty and never needs more.

How to Move Up Without Regretting It

If you are stepping up, do it the unglamorous way.

Start with two or three applications a week rather than daily, and give it a fortnight before changing anything. Apply in the evening at first, when your skin is not also dealing with sun, heat and the day. Watch how it responds - not for dramatic reactions, but for the small signals, tightness, a change in how your skin feels the following morning.

Build frequency gradually if all is well. There is no benefit to rushing, and the most common way people come unstuck with any active is by moving faster than their skin is inclined to.

Because ours is an oil-based serum, apply it onto damp skin and use less than you think. A few drops spread considerably further on damp skin than on dry, and most people over-apply oils at first.

What It Is Suited To

Vitamin C is an antioxidant, and in a country with the UV levels Australia has, that is not a small thing. Our skin deals with more environmental oxidative stress than most, and it accumulates over decades of ordinary life rather than dramatic sun exposure.

It suits skin showing uneven tone and pigmentation, fine lines, dullness and a loss of firmness - the visible accumulation of Australian sun and time. It supports the skin's own collagen production and helps maintain the barrier, and it works well alongside daily sun protection rather than in place of it.

The Formula, and Why It Is Short

Four ingredients. Olive squalane, THD-C, natural vitamin E, and a little steam distilled lemon oil.

There is no water in it, which means it needs no preservative system. There are no emulsifiers, so it layers cleanly over water-based serums rather than competing with them. And there are no fillers, because a short ingredient list is easier to trust and easier to check.

The squalane is not just a carrier, either. It is close in structure to the lipids skin makes for itself, so it sits comfortably rather than sitting on top, and it holds moisture in while the vitamin C does its work. Olive Squalane ingredient guide

A note on the lemon

Most of what we make is fragrance-free, so the lemon deserves an explanation.

It is there in a small amount, and the scent is fresh rather than perfumed. If you would rather do without it, the same serum is available without the lemon oil - the vitamin C, the squalane and the vitamin E are identical.

One detail worth knowing, because citrus and sunlight have a reputation together. Ours is steam distilled lemon oil, not cold pressed. Cold pressed citrus oils carry compounds called furocoumarins, which are what cause photosensitivity - the reason the usual advice is to keep citrus oils away from daytime skincare. Steam distillation leaves those compounds behind, which is why this one is considered photo-safe and why we chose it. For a serum many people use in the morning, that distinction is not a small one.

The Short Version

The advice to stay under twenty per cent is real advice about a real molecule. If your vitamin C is L-ascorbic acid, follow it - above that point you are buying irritation rather than benefit.

But vitamin C is a category, not a compound. Change to an oil-soluble ester at skin-neutral pH and the ceiling that rule describes is not the ceiling you are working with.

What does not change is the bit everyone skips. Consistency beats concentration. Choose the strength you will use, use it, and give it time. Supporting sun-affected skin is a marathon, not a sprint.

Is 30% vitamin C too strong?

It depends on the form. The widely repeated advice that concentrations above 20% are pointless comes from research on L-ascorbic acid, which relies on finite skin transporters that saturate and requires a strongly acidic formula. Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate (THD-C) is oil-soluble and formulated at skin-neutral pH, so neither of those limits applies in the same way. That said, 30% is not a starting point, and plenty of skin does well at lower concentrations.

What percentage vitamin C serum is best?

The one you will use consistently. A serum applied daily for years does more than a stronger one used briefly and abandoned. For L-ascorbic acid, 10 to 20% is the well-supported range. For oil-soluble derivatives such as THD-C, higher concentrations are workable because the molecule behaves differently, but starting lower and building is still the sensible approach.

Why do most sources say not to go above 20% vitamin C?

Two reasons, both specific to L-ascorbic acid. It relies on specific transporters to cross the skin, and those transporters saturate at around 20%, so additional product does not get absorbed. It also requires a formulation pH below about 3.5 to stay stable, and higher concentrations tend to mean more acidity and more irritation. Both constraints belong to that molecule rather than to vitamin C generally.

What is the difference between THD-C and L-ascorbic acid?

L-ascorbic acid is pure vitamin C - water-soluble and requiring a low pH to remain stable. THD-C (tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate) is an ester, with fatty acid chains attached to the reactive sites on the ascorbate molecule. This makes it oil-soluble and stable at skin-neutral pH. It is a precursor, converted to ascorbic acid by enzymes within the skin rather than arriving as active vitamin C.

Does a higher percentage of vitamin C work faster?

Not reliably. Skincare actives work through consistent use over months, and no concentration shortcuts that. Research on topical vitamin C generally runs over eight to twelve weeks. A higher concentration you use inconsistently will do less than a moderate one you use every day.

How do I move up to a stronger vitamin C serum?

Does oil-based vitamin C sting?

Can I use vitamin C around my eyes?

An oil-based formula is generally gentle enough for the eye area, but introduce it carefully and build up rather than starting with daily use. Everyone's tolerance around the eyes differs, and it is worth going slowly.

Does the lemon oil make it unsafe in sunlight?

Not this one. Photosensitivity from citrus oils is caused by furocoumarins, which are present in cold pressed citrus oils. Steam distilled lemon oil leaves those compounds behind, which is why it is considered photo-safe. It is a meaningful distinction for a serum many people apply in the morning. A version without any lemon oil is also available.

How should I store a vitamin C serum?

Cool, dark and closed. Vitamin C degrades with heat, light and oxygen, which is why packaging matters. Oil-based formulations are considerably more stable than water-based ones, but storage still affects how long a product stays at its best.
